ARTIST'S STATEMENT 

본인의 작업은 나를 둘러싼 주위 환경으로부터의 경험과 본인 사유를 혼합한 결과물이다. 본인은 작업을 통해 현대 미국과 한국 사회의 풍경과 사회상을 관찰, 비교하며, 동시대인의 욕망과 매스미디어에 의한 사회화 세뇌 되어가는 모습을 관찰하여, 정체성의 획일화와 혼돈의 문제를 드러내기 위한 시도한다. 특히, “Grass fields” 작업은 본인의 유학기간 중 겪었던 미국에서의 경험을 바탕으로 제작되었다. “Grass fields” 시리즈를 통해 현대 사회에서의 도시 풍경의 인위성과 잔디밭 조성 및 녹색에 집착하는 사람들의 심리에 대한 의문을 현대인의 모습을 빗대어 드러내고자 한다.

본인작업 “Grass fields” 는 사람들의  잘 가꾸어진 푸른 잔디밭에 관한 집착에 대한 질문에서 시작되었다. 사람들은 왜 잔디를 키우며, 잘 관리된 잔디밭이 미국의 일상 풍경과 한국에서 어떤 의미를 가지는지에 대한 의문의  개인적 경험과 사유를 통한 회화 매체로서의 표현이다.

한국에서의 잔디에 관한 기억은 군대에서 잔디를 더 푸르게 보이기 하기 위한 잔디색 스프레이를 뿌려대던 기이한 관경을 본 것에서 시작된다. 한국에서 잔디는 항상 관상용으로써 본인은 항상 잔디밭의 “출입 금지”라는 푯말을 본 것을 기억한다. 마치 이상화된 공간과 같은 느낌의 푸른 잔디를 볼때면, 내가 속한곳이 아닌 세상을 쳐다보는 느낌을 가진곤 하였다. 미국 유학 중 경험한 잔디밭은 본인에게 미국인이 얼마만큼 “Green Lawn” 에 집착하는지는 충격으로 다가왔다. 나는 한국과 현대 미국 풍경의 인위성에 집중하며, 푸른 잔디에 대한 집착은 현대 우리들의 일상에 근 현대 도시 경관 조성에 없어서는 안되는 풍경이 되었다. 심지어 똑 같은 크기로 깎인 잔디의 모습을 보며 일상성과 전체주의적 국가마저 상상하게 만든다. 그 도시환경의 풍경은 도시의 정체성을 대변한다. 완벽하게 관리 된 풀밭은 그 사회의 표상이며, 드러내고자 하는 가치마저 옅볼 수 있다고 생각한다. 실제로 북미 지역의 수많은 사막 지역인 캘리포니아와 애리조나 주에서는 물 부족에도 불구하고, 푸른 잔디를 소유하고자 수만 톤의 물을 낭비하고 있다. 도시 풍경을 통한 사람들의 유토피아에 대한 환상과 실제와 가상, 이상주의에 의문을 제시 하며, 익숙한 공간의 풍경을 익숙하지 않게 드러내고자 함을 시도한다.

I am a painter who creates imagery that embodies my psychological and emotional state. I draw upon elements of my personal lived experience to examine the desires of contemporary American and South Korean society. In my Grass Fields series, I intend to deconstruct the green landscape to unravel the intricacies of society.

My work called “Grass fields” starts with having questions about green grass fields. Why do people want to grow a green grass field and keep it well-managed?

In South Korea, my home country, grass fields were sprayed with grass colored paint and were purely ornamental. I was not allowed to walk in the grass fields. When I lived in US, I was shocked by how Americans are obsessive about green lawns. I am focusing on the artificiality of the landscape in Korea and United States. When I see evenly mowed grass, I also sense totalitarianism and paranoia. Some areas like deserts also have green grass fields. They use chemical pigments and sprinklers to maintain our expectations of grass. Through my paintings of grass fields, I want to question peoples’ desire for utopia, the real and unreal, and idealism. I am testing color and brush stroke in order to express an artificiality of landscape and a complex range of human emotions.
